U Mobile Broadband

After signed up the U Mobile plan, i can start using it after 2 hours. Since this plan not include any modem, i’ve purchased the ZTE HDSPA modem from 5G gallery.

Installation is simple, just load the sim card on the modem, and plug it to USB port on your PC/laptop. It will auto detect, and install driver & software. The ZTE modem is preloaded with all the mobile broadband settings for Maxis, Digi, Celcom & U Mobile, where the default settings is goes to Celcom. We need to change to U Mobile setting.

So far, in my house, the best signal area is my ground floor living room (1-2 bars) & upper floor master bedroom (2-4 bars). My computer room located ground floor totally no signal at all…T_T

Anyway, even only 1-2 bar of weak signal, the connection speed is still acceptable, can reach more than 1Mbps,  no problem watching online streaming video such as PPstream or PPlive.

I’ve also tried  downloading large file, speed is OK.

Overall, U Mobile broadband is not bad, fast connection speed, unlimited usage for only RM68 per month, the cheapest compare to others. Except signal not so good on my house.

PS: not sure whether the unlimited usage is true or not…

Samba File Sharing on Ubuntu

Samba is a networking protocol that allows compatibility with Windows-based networks. The Samba client is installed by default in Ubuntu Jaunty and should work seamlessly (unless you have have a firewall blocking the ports). The following instructions are to install a Samba server (which is not installed by default). This allows you to share your files over a Samba (Windows) network to other Samba clients.  Type below on your terminal to install it:

sudo apt-get install samba samba-tools system-config-samba

Once finish install, go to System–>Administrator–>Samba to configure Samba setting. Before configure, we need to create a folder that specified for sharing. Then, click add share to create new samba share, browse to the folder that u created earlier. Tick “writable” if u want to edit the share folder.

Google Public DNS

Search Engine Giant- Google has launched their free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service. The DNS protocol is an important part of the web’s infrastructure, serving as the Internet’s phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day.

By using Google Public DNS you can:

Google Public DNS IP addresses are as follows:

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

Detail configuration instructions.

Maxis Wired Broadband

I’ve just tested the Maxis Wired Broadband. The subscripted package is 1Mbps.

The package include a Aztech 605E ADSL modem.

During peak hour ( 7pm ), i’ve performed below test.

The result shown that it can reach more than 80% of the maximum speed, which is quite good. Perhaps it is due to in whole Perak state, only this residential area is available for Maxis Wired Broadband service.

I’ve heard that during non peak hour, the speed might reach more than 1Mbps. Hopefully Maxis wired broadband will be stable than TM Net Streamyx

IPNetInfo

IPNetInfo is a small utility that allows you to easily find all available information about an IP address: The owner of the IP address, the country/state name, IP addresses range, contact information (address, phone, fax, and email), and more. This utility can be very useful for finding the origin of unsolicited mail. You can simply copy the message headers from your email software and paste them into IPNetInfo utility. IPNetInfo automatically extracts all IP addresses from the message headers, and displays the information about these IP addresses.

The IP address information is retrieved by sending a request to the whois server of ARIN. If ARIN doesn’t maintain the information about the requested IP address, a second request is sent to the whois server of RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC or AfriNIC.
After the IP address information is retrieved, IPNetInfo analyzes the Whois record and displays it in a table.

Setup Aztech DSL600EU modem

One of our friend ask about guide of setting up Aztech DSL600EU modem. This model is a combo router which comes with Ethernet port and USB port. For ethernet, just plug network cable only, if connect through USB, need to install the USB driver in order for PC to detect. Other than that, Aztech DSL600EU support both bridge mode and router mode. In bridge mode, u need to create a dialer containing your streamyx user name and password. Every time u want to connect to internet, u need to manually dial it. If in router mode, streamyx user name and password is stored inside the modem, once you switch it ON, it will automatic establish internet connection for you.

Due to bridge mode is a bit fussy, is more convenient to setup as router mode.

The modem configuration is web based, therefore u need to open up IE/firefox browser and under URL type “192.168.1.1” and press Enter to login to router. Below screen will appear.

For default, Both the username and password are “admin“.

After login screen , u will be direct to quick start screen.

Wireless Printing Using Linksys Access Point

Recently i’ve setup a Multi Functional Printer ( MFP ) at customer place where customer using wireless networking through a Linksys WAP54G access point connected to ADSL modem in order for internet access.

I had been order to create wireless bridging to their wireless network using an AT-WA7400 enterprise class dual radio WLAN access point that can operate within both 2.4GHz ( 802.11b/g mode ) and 5GHz ( 802.11a mode ) frequency bands.. ( * MFP is network ready )

The concept from HQ is to wired access point to MFP, 1 radio wireless bridge with Linksys access point, the 2nd radio become AP. What the heck? How can it be done?

For my understanding, 802.11a is not compatible with 802.11b/g… When i wireless bridge the 802.11b/g radio with linksys, no wireless network available due to laptop and desktop wireless adapter is in 802.11b/g mode… For 802.11a radio, i cant wireless bridge it, both linksys and my AT-WA7400 ( 802.11b/g ) available on the wireless network. Once connected to linksys, able to access internet but cant print. On the other hand, connected to my AT-WA7400, able to wireless printing but cant access internet… God sake… I spent 4 hours plus at customer place and this is what i got…Customer requirement is able to print and access internet at the same time…

No choice, i brought back customer linksys WAP54G access point and try configure it at home. Finally, i found out that linksys is not compatible with other brand. Linksys can only be linked back to Linksys only for client mode, repeater mode or wireless bridge mode…

That’s the problem… Then i went to linksys forum and discuss with some expert…The best way i can do is to purchase another Linksys WAP54G access point, and set it as AP client. Then, i got another WAP54G, set it as AP client, filled in customer original WAP54G MAC address, and used site survey to locate customer WAP54G, filled in WEP code and is done. The wireless network is still the same WAP54G from customer access point. Now, users are able to access internet and wireless printing at the same time.

Now only i know that for wireless networking, is better stick to the same brand if u want to extend your wireless network in future.

Wireless Printing or Share Printing

I just brought a Dlink wireless router.

To enable wireless printing is very simple.
First assured that the printer is connected to a desktop and driver is installed. Then make sure both laptop and desktop is in the same network.

Go to “Printer & Faxes”–> right click –> choose “share” to share out your printer.

After shared out, on the laptop side “printer & faxes”, u will see the shared printer available. Whenever u want to print from Laptop, just choose the network printer driver and u can start printing.

This applied to wired network also.
