U Mobile Broadband

After signed up the U Mobile plan, i can start using it after 2 hours. Since this plan not include any modem, i’ve purchased the ZTE HDSPA modem from 5G gallery.

Installation is simple, just load the sim card on the modem, and plug it to USB port on your PC/laptop. It will auto detect, and install driver & software. The ZTE modem is preloaded with all the mobile broadband settings for Maxis, Digi, Celcom & U Mobile, where the default settings is goes to Celcom. We need to change to U Mobile setting.

So far, in my house, the best signal area is my ground floor living room (1-2 bars) & upper floor master bedroom (2-4 bars). My computer room located ground floor totally no signal at all…T_T

Anyway, even only 1-2 bar of weak signal, the connection speed is still acceptable, can reach more than 1Mbps,  no problem watching online streaming video such as PPstream or PPlive.

I’ve also tried  downloading large file, speed is OK.

Overall, U Mobile broadband is not bad, fast connection speed, unlimited usage for only RM68 per month, the cheapest compare to others. Except signal not so good on my house.

PS: not sure whether the unlimited usage is true or not…

Wireless Broadband in Ipoh

Since i do not know how long it takes for Maxis Wired Broadband to be available, i decided to get a temporary wireless broadband.

Below is the wireless broadband provider that i came across:

P1 Wimax – No coverage at my area (Ulu Kinta)

Maxis

Pro: Cheap entry plan, free modem

Con: Limited usage, expensive price for higher usage volume

PS: My friend at Menglembu is using it,  the reply i got from him is that very slow, perhaps he exceed the quota.

Celcom

Pro: Free modem

Con: Expensive for unlimited plan, extra registration fee.

PS: My friend tried the RM98 plan at Ulu Kinta, got coverage, not very good signal, but can online.

Digi

Pro: Promotion rate of  RM88 per month for 10GB plan with free modem

Con: Tied 12 months in order to get the free modem, limited usage

U Mobile

Pro: Cheap, only RM68 per month for unlimited usage.

Con: No modem included

PS: My fried tried at Ulu Kinta also, saying that not bad.

After considered the usage volume and coverage, i decided to sign up u mobile package & purchase own modem.

Broadband Ranking

I’ve checked through SpeedTest on global internet connection speed. Below is the data.

Malaysia ranking 85 in download speed, which is around 2.23Mbps. Our neighbour country Singapore is ranking 25 where the download speed is 8.17Mbps. Wow, so big different.

Google Public DNS

Search Engine Giant- Google has launched their free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service. The DNS protocol is an important part of the web’s infrastructure, serving as the Internet’s phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day.

By using Google Public DNS you can:

Google Public DNS IP addresses are as follows:

  • 8.8.8.8

Google Chrome OS

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Well, even Chrome OS is superfast, there is few disadvantages also:

  • support only flash memory, no hard drive
  • rely on internet & networking
  • not support 3rd party software

Maxis Wired Broadband

I’ve just tested the Maxis Wired Broadband. The subscripted package is 1Mbps.

The package include a Aztech 605E ADSL modem.

During peak hour ( 7pm ), i’ve performed below test.

The result shown that it can reach more than 80% of the maximum speed, which is quite good. Perhaps it is due to in whole Perak state, only this residential area is available for Maxis Wired Broadband service.

I’ve heard that during non peak hour, the speed might reach more than 1Mbps. Hopefully Maxis wired broadband will be stable than TM Net Streamyx
