Windows XP could not start

When booting window xp, after POST screen, below error prompt out and fail to login window, except when u insert a window xp boot disk.

“Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk.
Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.”

This error occur because of a disk hardware configuration problem. This error message means that the partition referenced in the ARC paths in boot.ini does not exist, so check the partition( ) number first. If you’re sure the value is correct then try different rdisk( )values until you get a working configuration. Is also determines that the ARC paths in the [operating systems] section or the default entry in BOOT.INI is incorrect.

In order to login to window, we need to insert the window xp cd and start up window.

To edit boot.ini file, right click my computer–>Properties–>Advanced–>Startup & Recovery Settings–>Click Edit and the Boot.ini file will pop up.

Double-check that multi( ) and disk( ) are both set to 0 ( default vales where only having 1 hard disk and OS ), and verify that {{rdisk(x)partition}}points to the correct partition where Windows XP is installed. Once edit u can just save the file as usual. Due to my window is installed on 1st partition ( my hard disk is separated into 3 partitions ), so the value on partition( ) is “1″.

To determines how many partitions on your hard disk, just right click My Computer–> Manage–>Click Disk Management. Below screen will show up. My PC only got 1 hard disk, so only DISK0 is available, subsequent DISK1..DISK2 means other hard disks or storage such as pen-drive ( label removable instead of basic ).

Once finish, take out the window xp cd and reboot the pc. U should be able to login to window as usual.

PS: Always back up your important data to prevent data loss before any modification.
