Window XP built in a powerful tool called Remote Assistance. Remote Assistance allow user to send a request for assistance to another Windows XP system such as asking for help remotely even though miles distance aways.

Such a connection to give assistance is possible via any connection, which supports TCP/IP :
- local area network (LAN )
- Wide area network (WAN)
- dial-in via Modem * Better to have broadband connection because it will be lagging using narrowband.
- via the Internet
Notes:
- to be able to use “Remote Assistance”, both the system of the Novice and Expert must have
Windows XP installed (if one of these systems is not running Windowsx XP, use NetMeeting ) !
- when connecting via a firewall , it is required to have an open TCP/IP port 3389.

Once the “Expert” has accepted the invitation and connects to the “Novice” system, he can see on his screen the desktop of the “Novice”, he is also (if allowed by the “Novice”) take control and use the mouse and keyboard on his “Expert” system to control the “Novice” system

This is a very good tools especially for technician to solve customer computer problem related to software issue such as window problem and etc.

Guide for setting up Remote Assistance.

1. Enable your Remote Assistance function on your PC

Right click my computer–>properties–>remote

Tick the Allow Remote Assistance column to enable it. To set the limitation period for the connection to remain open.

Remember to tick the Remote Control column, if not your opponent can only view your PC.

2. Send an invitation for remote assistance

go to start–>all programs–>remote assistance

Click the ” Invite someone to help you ” and your will be enter below page.

Here u will see 3 option to send invitation for remote assistance. If u are using windows messenger, u can use it to send invitation also. But using messenger u cannot set password for your invitation.
Therefore i will recommend to send invitation using ” save invitation as a file ” which is a advance method. Unless the friends in your messenger list are very friend with u or can be trusted.

After u click the ” save invitation as a file ” , u will reach below page.

Here u can set your name and expire time for the invitation. Then u click ” continue ” to setup password for your invitation.

After input the password u just click the ” save invitation ” tab to save your file to the folder u want. The file format will be “.msrcincident”.

After that you have to get your invitation file to your “Expert”. Such as send the file as a attachment on email or u share out your file. When your “Expert” received the file and open it, the remote assistance session will be start and it will prompt out a password for your “Expert” user to enter.

* During this period, make sure your internet connection is live, and password has been given to your “Expert”.

3. Connecting from the Expert system

After the Expert open the invitation file, it will prompt out password for Expert to enter then only can start the session.

At novice side, below page will show up indicate that expert is ready to start remote assistance session.

After you click yes, then expert can view your desktop. Your side will shown the tab of remote assistance. During the session, u can also start talking with Expert. ( * must have microphone turned on at both side )

At Expert system, expert can view all the content of your desktop.

When the expert click on the take control button, then u will receive a dialog stating that expert want to share control of your PC. Once your click yes, then expert can take control of your PC.

* During expert taking control, it is recommend that only 1 side can use the keyboard & mouse at the same time.

* To terminate the session, u just need to press ESC key on your keyboard.
