Permanent Residents Must Change Their IC To MyPR

PUTRAJAYA, June 1 (Bernama) — People living in Malaysia with permanent resident (PR) status are required to change their identity card (IC) to MyPR beginning today as the National Registration Department (NRD) had launched the new IC with better security features for non-citizens with PR status.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said they could change their IC to the MyPR until Dec 31 next year and every conversion would be charged RM40.

“For those who fail to do so after the deadline, we may revoke their PR status as we have given them ample time to change, beginning today until the end of next year.

“Their number is not big, only 378,088 people,” he told reporters after launching the Permanent Resident Identity Card MyPR, here Thursday.

The launching of the new IC was also to overcome the confusion that arose previously between the MyKad for Malaysian nationals and MyKad PR for permanent residents, and the problem of impersonation and information fraud.

“Previously, there was not much difference between MyKad PR and the MyKad, still blue in colour except for the four small boxes which were red in colour and the word “permanent resident” written on the MyKad PR to indicate that they belong to this group.

“This gave an opportunity to others to forge or abuse the identity card,” he said.

Radzi said the MyPR had a red background, showing the nationality and identification of the permanent resident more clearly, which could help facilitate official transactions involving identification of the foreigner by any agencies, government departments or private firms.

He said application for conversion of the IC for permanent residents to the MyPR could be made at any NRD branch throughout the country.

However, application for MyPR for the first time can only be made at the NRD headquarters in Putrajaya and the respective state NRD headquarters.
